Because of his fondness for his Uncle, he took ";William"; as a middle name.

On March 5, 1851 William married Martha Ellen LAUGHLIN, daughter of John LAUGHLIN (October 31, 1782-March 11, 1862) & Jean BROLY (July 27, 1788-), in Shelby County, Ohio. Martha Ellen was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, on July 2, 1827. Martha Ellen died on October 30, 1903; she was 76.

[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #3092, Date of Import: 27 Jun 2000]

Martha Ellen LAUGHLIN, was born in Jefferson County, Ohio 2 July 1827. She came to Shelby County, Ohio in March 1839. She married William PATTEN who was born 5 July 1813 and died 5 July 1902. Martha E. Patten died 30 October 1903.

John LAUGHLIN was born in Ireland October 31, 1782. He was only eighteen months old when they started for America. His parents, Robert and Mary Laughlin with three children, David, Elizabeth and John.

They settled in Pennsylvania and lived there for some time, his father died in Juniata County, Pennsylvania in 1794. John Laughlin later settled in Jefferson County, Ohio on a farm 14 miles north of Steubenville, Ohio. He was married to Jean Broly March 16, 1814. Jean Broly was born in County Derry, Ireland July 27, 1788. She was a daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth (CALHOUN) Broly. Elizabeth Calhoun Broly and daughters Jean and Ann came to America in 1798. William Broly, the son had the small pox and died in Ireland. Ann Broly married Isaac Putnam, had three children; Jane, Archibald and Hobert. Jane married ____ Cadwell. John Laughlin and Jean Broly's mothers were sisters, Mary and Elizabeth Calhoun. John and Jean Broly Laughlin had a family of eight children: Robert Caloun, William David, Mary Ann, Archibald Elver, Elizabeth Jane, John Calhoun, Martha Ellen and James.

John Laughlin was a soldier in the war of 1812. He was a Democrat in politics and a Presbyterian. He moved his family to Shelby County, Ohio in the spring of 1839, and settled on a farm one mile east of Hardin, Ohio. When they came to Shelby County, Ohio, Jean Broly Laughlin and three sons: Robert, Archie and John came in a wagon across the state while John Laughlin, Elizabeth Broly, William, Mary, Martha and James came down the Ohio River on a flat boat owned by Squire Taggart to Cincinnatti, Ohio. From Cincinnatti they traveled in a canal boat and arrived at Troy, Ohio Saturday night. As they did not travel on the Sabboth, they remained there until Monday and came on to Piqua, Ohio. William walked from Troy to their home. Then Robert and William took the horses and wagon and met the rest at Piqua. On the way up from Piqua and in crossing the creek at the Kennard farm [later owned by Wallace Ewing and sisters], Elizabeth Broly lost her balance and fell out of the wagon injuring her so badly that she died from the effect about two weeks later (April 18, 1839) and she was buried in the old cemetery at Sidney, Ohio. The remains of Elizabeth Broly and James Laughlin were removed from the old graveyard at Sidney, Ohio to the Turtle Creek cemetery one half mile south of Hardin, Ohio, October 31, 1902. They were carried out of the old cemetery by John and Arlie Laughlin and John and M. R. Russell. They were taken past the home where they both died, and Elizabeth Broly is now buried on part of that farm and not far from where the accident happened that caused her death.

John Laughlin died March 11, 1862 and is buried in the Turtle Creek cemetery. Jean Laughlin died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Martha E. PATTEN, April 8, 1872 in her 84th year and was buried in Turtle Creek cemetery.
