The study programme – “Home Environment and Visual Art in Education”

The code of the programme – 42141

The duration of the programme – 4 academic years of full-time studies or

5 academic years of part-time studies

Amount of credits – 160 CP

Requirements for those, starting studies at the study programme – general

secondary education or 4-year secondary vocational education

Qualification to be obtained – Teacher of Household/Home Economics and Visual Art

Degree to be obtained - Professional Bachelor in Education

Requirements for obtaining the diploma – to acquire general courses, courses in pedagogy, psychology, research methodology, teaching methodology of household, home economics and visual art, and professional specialization courses in household, home economics and visual art, to complete practice in amount of 26CP, to develop and defend the Bachelor’s Paper.

The programme is implemented by – the Institute of Education and Home Economics at the Faculty of Engineering, Latvia University of Agriculture (LLU)

1. The aim and objectives of the study programme

Aim:

The teachers of household/home economics and visual art with the developed professional, social and reflection competences, who would be able to solve the educational problems and who are aware of the significance of their professional activities for the development of pupils’ personalities, particularly in the rural environment, as well as the importance of lifelong education.

Objectives: to ensure the provision of the study programme content, academic staff, methodological, material-technical, scientific and favourable study environment for the achievement of the aim of the study programme in order the new teacher could show his/her pedagogical competence as a result of studies:

  • is able to organize the teaching/learning and educational process for the achievement of pedagogical aims within the household/home economics subjects and the subject of visual art;

  • knows, understands, can evaluate, explain and creatively implement the curriculum of household/home economics and visual art basis of regulatory documentation and the insight regarding the significance and developmental perspective of these subjects;

  • can develop relations with pupils, their parents, colleagues full of respect in order to help the pupils to adapt to the school environment, thus facilitating the development of values acquisition by pupils, their self-realization and self-discipline;

  • can analyze and evaluate him/herself and his/her professional performance and draw conclusions to improve it;

  • can substantiate and solve the problems in the field of his/her studies/research; obtain and use relevant data in order to reflect on the significant social, scientific and ethical issues concerning the development of pupils’ individualities;

  • understands and is aware of the necessity of lifelong education, can substantiate it, as well as to provide pupils with the information on the possibilities to choose their future profession and career according to pupils’ interests and abilities.

The aim and objectives of the programme were defined more exactly according to the accreditation experts’ recommendations and the basic approaches of the EU Qualifications in the European higher education space 2000-2004.

The content of the programme Home Environment and Visual Art in Education

  • General courses in the field of natural sciences, social sciences and humanitarian sciences, for getting of comprehensive academic education and problem solving ability;

  • Pedagogic, Psychology, Didactics, Research Methodology, Methods of Home Economics and Visual Art, IT in Education and students have pedagogical and methodical practice in order to develop the necessary pedagogical, social and reflection competence;

  • Culture and Art, Food Chemistry, Physics - courses giving the necessary theoretical basis for studies;

  • Courses that are necessary to obtain the qualification of a teacher of Home Economics and Visual Art – Principles of Design, Technologies of Textiles, Applied Engineering Sciences, Nutrition, Home Economics, Sciences of Visual Art: Composition, Drawing, Form Design , Painting,Fin Art;

  • Elective courses;

  • The students write and defend the bachelor paper including pedagogical research in relation to household/home economics and Visual Art.

The results of studies in a form of knowledge, skills and attitude:

The Standard of Teacher’s Profession (Reg. No. PS 0238, approved by the Ministry of Education and Science - Decree No. 116 of February 27, 2004) provides for the study results to be achieved in a form of knowledge, skills and attitude as a result of the acquisition of higher education (WWW.izmpic.gov.lv):

  • Knowledge that lays the foundations for the development of skills and abilities, necessary for the performance of teacher’s professional duties, is obtained by studying the respective study courses. The table, presented below, shows the correspondence of the study courses of the study programme Home Environment and Visual Art in Education in order to ensure the acquisition of knowledge in conformity with the Standard of Teacher’s Profession.

The skills, necessary for the performance of a teacher’s professional responsibilties, are acquired by studying the respective study courses, fulfilling independent tasks and performing research, as well as developing Term Papers. The students show the acquired skills, while performing their practical training and developing Bachelor’s Paper.

Readiness to continue studies on an ongoing basis in conformity wuth the latest pedagogical and psychological conclusions and the topicalities of profession within the common European educational space.

Positive and supporting attitude towards pupils, other teachers, pedagogical staff and specialists, parents and society.

Creative activities.

Readiness for the working conditions – the subject to the plan of the organization of teaching/learning and educational process.

Readiness for the work, which takes place during classes and out of them (during break, preparing for classes, correcting and grading pupils’ written asignments etc., visiting pupils at their home, going on an excursion and taking part in other extracurricular events together with pupils).

Participation in the development of the standards of educational programmes and the curricula of subjects.

2 The organization of the professional higher education Bachelor’s study programme “Home Environment and Visual Art in Education”

The study programme Home Environment and Visual Art in Education is developed on the basis of the second level professional higher education study programme Home Economics-Education with the additional specialization in visual art(code: 43141; qualification: the teacher of home economics, household and visual art; accredited till December 31, 2007), implemented at the Institute of Education and Home Economics of the Faculty of Engineering, and it has been developed analogically to the professional higher education Bachelor’s study programme Home Environment and Information Technologies in Education implemented at the Institute of Education and Home Economics (Professional Bachelor’s degree in Education; the teacher of household/home economics and the teacher of information technologies at the elementary education level).

The Professional Higher Education Bachelor’s study programme Home Environment and Visual Art in Education is organized as full-time studies and part-time studies.

1 CP corresponds to 40 hrs of studies (a week):

out of which 16 hrs of full-time studies are regulated by the time-table of classes, but for part-time studies 5 hrs are regulated by the time-table of classes.
