Bibliography to the Opiliones

(Update to a Preliminary Draft of 27 July 1997)

by James C. Cokendolpher

The following draft is a preliminary bibliography of the Opiliones. It falls short of a finished manuscript, but is being donated to the International Society of Arachnology (ISA) and distributed by the Society in hopes that other ISA opilionologists will volunteer to complete this project.

In 1978, James Cokendolpher started gathering citations for this bibliography. He and his wife spent countless months copying citations from the Zoological Record onto index cards. As publications were obtained the citations that were cited therein were also added to cards. The data were then slowly transferred to electronic format on a variety of computers. As the project never received any institutional support it has required many years to progress to this point. Over the decades the project has also benefited from the efforts of many authors and other cooperators (see acknowledgments). It contains every citation encountered, including those from other electronic databases. Because of the many different sources for the citations, the styles of the citations vary.

The master bibliography (available from ISA) is a file for Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, equipped with the following fonts to display non-english alphabets: Times, Times CE, Jaghbub, LivTimes (=Libiesu), Latinskij book, Georgian, Times OE Roman, and Cyrillica. Computers without functionally the same fonts will display gibberish in the affected citations.

In this version these less common fonts are all replaced by their base font. There seems to be no other quick way to distribute a file via the internet readable on all computer platforms.

The bibliography includes citations to all normal publications (books, journals, etc.) as well as all newspapers, magazines, dissertations, thesis, as well as governmental reports. Basically, any printed material which is available to the public is listed.

The bibliography contains numerous typographical errors and misspellings, for which the reader’s forgiveness is sought. Many of these result from misinterpretation of data (especially non-English languages) from old handwritten index cards; others are keyboarding mistakes.

Author’s full names are given, even when they are not listed on the paper in that manner. Not only does this make it easier to sort the bibliography, but it also makes it easier to find publications by the same author. This bibliography is computer-sorted, and thus does not follow standard academic conventions, especially when second and subsequent authors are involved. Likewise, a computer with an English operating system does not sort foreign alphabets correctly.

ISA needs help to complete and continue this project. Specifically ISA seeks an editor for this opilionid bibliography. The ISA Secretary cannot function as a bibliographer for all non-acarine arachnids, and thus this project will only make progress if one or more ISA members are willing to assume the responsibility. Please communicate with the ISA Secretary (cf. ISA website at
