Regarding William, Sr.'s wife Susanna. I still believe she was his 2nd wife. Note how Edward was

married in 1765 and Susanna (dau) marries in 1790. That is a 25 year span & daughters usually married

fairly young. Edward had to have been born about 1740-44. William, Sr. was probably born 1715-20. It's

all possible Susanna was his only wife & the daughters were all older when they married. Who is Watt

Johnson? He must be a son in law. He is named first in the will & the children seemed be named in

order - so did William have an older daughter that died before him. Maybe Watt is a grandson & already

of age. Susanna Mortensen.

Notes on William Burgess and Susanna

For several years I have believed that William Burgess came from the James River Valley. When at

the Library of Virginia I found hundreds of documents on men with the name William Burgess. There

may be a clue for us in those records. It would be a huge research project taking many hours.

In the fall of 2004 Michael Burgess started working on the Burgess DNA project. To see the results of

his project please visit <>

The DNA of Jim Burgess was tested as being a representative sample of the William Burgess family of

Bedford County, Virginia. (Will 1778)

The DNA of Michael Burgess was tested as being a representative sample of the William Burgess family

of Richmond County, Virginia.

Results through two samples of 25 sticks are a 100% match. To Jim Burgess this means that his

father and mother are related through at least 10 to 15 generations.

For research purposes I believe that our family came to America through the Northern Neck of Virginia.

We have no documentation to prove this.

Michael Burgess wrote The House of Burgesses in 1994. It is an excellent book. The ancestry of Jim

Burgessf this James Burgess does not match the DNA of William Burgess of Bedford County, Virginia

even though both families lived in Bedford County at approximately the same time. Further testing may

be done to disprove this theory.

NOTE: I have been working on determining who Susanna might be for almost forty years. I have no

idea what her maiden name was. Many have speculated that her name was Garland since she named

a son Garland. Who knows? Here is the little information that I have found.
