JAMES ELLIOT STEWART, the 3rd son of Capt. Ralph Stewart and his wife Mary Elliott Stewart, was

born in 1775, in Augusta County, Virginia on Stewart's Creek. (now Stuart's Run) of the Tygart's Valley

Rd., the part of the county now known as Randolph County, Virginia. Capt Ralph stated he was

stationed , while in the service, in Tygart's Valley shortly after the Battle of Point Pleasant, in 1774-78.

His family was living on the old patent in the Cowpasture Valley of Augusta County, Virginia. later they

joined Capt Ralph in the Tygarts Valley. (Reference Application for a pension).

James was a drummer boy when he was nine years old, during the early Revolution. As a young man

he served under Capt Hugh Caperton of Greenbrier County, Virginia. Capt Caperton was ordered by

the Governor of Virginia to raise a company of New River Valley men to combat the prowling bands of

Indians in 1793.

yeoman with wife Mary lived on Christians' Creek, in Beverley Manor, Augusta County, Virginia. They

were most probably the parents of Hugh Caperton (Captain) of Greenbrier company, of men from the

New River Valley, among them was James Stewart, Joseph Canterbury (a brother of John Canterbury).

In 1789, James Stewart's land joined Thomas Lewis, John McClenachan and Colonel Fleming's land of

Botetourt County, Virginia Patent Book 19 page 453.

James Stewart in 1793 had 200 acres of land on Whipoorwill Creek. A patent for military service. In

1783, James Stewart was owed for two horses, nine head of cattle used by Captain Frazier's Company

in Botetourt County, Virginia.

In 1835, James owned land in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

James married on 26 May 1798 Miss Nancy Ann Burgess a daughter of Edward Burgess, by Rev

Alexander Ross. There were of Montgomery County, Virginia

James moved from the western part of Virginia into Tazewell County and by 1810 to Buffalo Shoals in

Wayne County, Virginia. By 1817 - 1818 he moved over into Kentucky. His farm lay on the banks of

the Big Sandy river, near to where the Ohio River and Bear Creek flows into the Big Sandy.

Some believe that James Elliot STEWART and Nancy Anne BURGESS were married 26 May 1798

age 9 - drummer in Rev. War?

In 1812 a Methodist Society was formed at John Burgess's, eight miles above Louisa. About the same

time another was organized at the mouth of Paint Creek in the house which was later occupied by

Moses Preston. Preaching was also held in the homes of Hezekiah Borders and Judge Borders. The

Prestonsburg Methodist Society which was organized about this time was generally held at thehome of

Harry B Mayo, and later at the home of Lewis Mayo. Soon thereafter a Society of Methodists was

organized at Pikeville, and then at adjacent points along the river under the direction of ordained

itinerant preachers, chief among whom wasthe Rev Kavanaugh.
