I love my father and my mother. Jim Burgess

My father James Dolliver Burgess was born 9 Apr 1920 on the Barboursville Farm, Barboursville, Cabell

County, West Virginia. He was the tenth child and ninth son of Hiram Grant Burgess and Lena Mae

Browning. Dad often said the

Burgess boys knew very little about hard times as they were growing up on the farm. Living on the farm

gave them the opportunity to work which taught them how to work at many tasks. Dad often said that

they were yanked up in that

they were raised mostly by the older boys.

Lena Mae Browning died 12 August 1932 when Dad was twelve years old. Because she died when Dad

was so young her death had a great impact on the whole family, especially the younger boys. Ironically

I believe her death

helped to keep all the boys unusually close in adulthood.

All of the boys worked hard raising cattle, horses, chickens etc on the farm. Gardening was also a

necessity to survive in those days. Clearing the fields, planting, hoeing, harvesting, and cleaning the

fields for the next havest taught them that they did not want to be farmers. As they grew older none of

the boys made a living in farming, but chose other

occupations, still most of them enjoyed working their gardens in future years. They enjoyed swimming

in the Guyandotte River, playing in near by caves that were on the farm, Dad said they had a

basketball court in the barn.

Several of the older brothers enjoyed playing all sports which gave the younger boys James and Robert

and example to follow.

Not having seen the farm until about 1953 I do not know what it looked like. I am sure that Lena and

especially Hiram made sure that the farm was kept clean and respectable. I know this because the

entire family always kept

them homes clean. Dad talked about the big breakfasts they had. I can imagine the eggs fried, country

ham, sausage, bacon with pancakes cooked apples. Fresh milk was always plentiful. I can see the

boys fighting over who would clean up the mess. I imagine the dishes often went undone for a spell.

From stories I have heard they often slept in one big room all together. I know there were a few

disagreements and fights among the boys. I also know that they stood together when trouble came from

neighbor boys. They had many

good friends as they grew up. I know this from the hundreds of friends who attended by fathers funeral.

Aunt Anthea being the only daughter and older helped to take care of the boys from time to time. Uncle

Harry Burgess married Maude Brumfield 17 Jan 1933 just five months after Lena Mae passed on. Aunt

Maude raised to boys

more than any one else. I am sure they enjoyed coming home to dinners that she prepared for them.

Still they missed and needed their mother.

Uncle Harry worked for the C&O Railroad for several years. I do not understand why Uncle Harry did

not play golf, because Golden, Billy, Robert and James must have worn out the old golf course at

Barboursville. Certainly

this is were they all gained their love for the game of golf.

Several of the boys attended Watson Elementary ";University"; as they called it in latter years. It was

simply a one or two room school house. All the kids seem to have received a good education which

speaks well of learning with out spending a lot of money on education. Lettie Browning a first cousin

was one of their teachers. Many of their friendships which they had for a life time where found at

Watson elementary.

Dad went to Barboursville High School where he played football, met my mother Eloise Burgess, and

got a good education. Dad understood the importance of a good education and stressed the importance

nearly every day of

my life. He correctly felt that by getting an education doors of opportunity would be open when we

graduated from college. He was right.

It seemed that most everyone had a nick name in those days. Dad was Gut. Uncle Harry was Ironhead.

Uncle Robert was Mag. I have forgotten others. These names became names that I have learned to

respect through the years.

When mom and dad met she knew that he was the man that she would marry. They dated for several

years and as is normal with teenagers they would break up and then get back together. I have one

letter written July 1, 1938 written

by Dad to my mother. Dad had been up the Guyan River camping with his brother. In the letter he

tells her he misses her kisses and loving. Pretty normal for an eighteen year old couple.

They were married December 20, 1940 at Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio. Patsy Jefferson and his wife

went with them to be married. They lived on Shaw Street in Barboursville West Virginia in an area they

called ";Hog pen holler";.

Dad planted trees in the back yard I love to go to that home to see how big the trees are now. My

brother David Cockrell Burgess was born 20 July 1942 and died that same day. I believe that he must

have been very special not

having had to have lived in this life. Mom and Dad must have been very sad and disappointed in losing

their first child David Cockrill Burgess.

James married (MRIN:2) Eloise Burton BURGESS-8 on 20 Dec 1940 in Ironton, Lawrence, Ohio, USA. Eloise was born on 18 Nov 1921 in Lundale, Logan, West Virginia, USA. She died on 16 Feb 2005 in Tempe, Maricopa, Arizona, USA. She was buried in Ona, Cabell, West Virginia, USA.

My mother Eloise Burgess was one of the most spiritual people that I ever knew. We had many

wonderful conversations about Jesus Christ and the Atonement. She loved our family more than life

itself. She sacrificed so that our family could

have many of the things we the good things in life.

My mother and father loved each other very much. They were high school sweet Hearts and were

completely faithful to each other. Their influence made a huge Impact on my life. I love my mother very

much.

Jim Burgess

_______________________

This is a celebration of the life of Eloise Burgess. The tears that we shed today are tears of joy and

remembering the life of a virtuous mother and grandmother. We know that she is with Dad, David and

other family members. She is happy

Being with our Savior and our family.

Parents shape us and make us who we are!

My Dad was raised on the Burgess Barboursville Farm during the 1930’s. He always said that they did

not know there was a depression going on. He learned to work hard on the farm. Dad was the member

of his family who was very handy with his hands. He was a plumber, electrician and carpenter. He was

always working on some project. He enjoyed working with his hands. Dad loved us very much. He

was a strong man emotionally. He was not always real good at showing that love.

Mom was much the opposite. She had the great compassion and the love that kept their relationship

and our family together. She would rather stay at home and read the scriptures. Mom had the spiritual

believes to seal their love together forever.

My mother and father were high school sweethearts. Mom lived on Main Street

On the main drag in the small town of Barboursville West Virginia. Dad was more

Country and mom more small town USA. Dad was a star on the football field and mom played in the

band was in school plays.

Mom always told me that she always loved Dad. When they broke up she knew that he would be back.

They were very much in love. When he died she told me that she would miss his beautiful eyes.

Five months after I was born my Dad found himself in the Great Lakes Naval Boot Camp serving in the

United States Navy. As far as I can tell I was three years and three months old when my father returned

home. My parents are from the Generation that Tom Brokaw calls the greatest generation!

Mom felt that she was a true Virginian in spite of being born and raised in West Virginia. She would tell

me about the family in Virginia on a regular basis. It was from the stories

Of John Thomas Cockrill and Edmonia Utterback that I learned to love Virginia.

Monkey story! Plastic Soldier .50

I remember that my mother played in the piano in every church that we attended.

At a very early age she played the piano and would have me sing with her. I loved to sing. At the age

of 9-10 she would take me to the city mission and other churches to sing. She took me to sing in

Church meetings. Dreama Howard would sit in the back seat and kiss. Mom and Dad never said

anything about what was going on in the back seat.

My mother inherited some money and donated enough money to buy a very nice organ for the

Macedonia Baptist Church.

Lived in the country - Uncle Harry Gave me a job at the Snak Shak. Mom and dad would drive me to

work on Friday and Saturday night so that I could make $3.00 to $4.00 an evening.

I received my Testimony of my Savior Jesus Christ came by sitting on her lap or on the floor listening to

her read and explain the scriptures. At an early age as my mother told me of her love for him. My early

testimony of Jesus Christ relied on her testimony.

We have vivid memories of mom sitting in the chair reading her scriptures, writing notes in a small note

book and watching her Christian television shows.

Linda brightened our lives by baptizing the cats in the rain barrel and sitting on the chicken nest in the

barn trying to hatch eggs.

I know today that Mom and Dad always went out so that Linda and I could dress well have the material

blessings of life. We were by no means rich! They gave us the best they could for that time and space.

Everyone in Barboursville knew that I was the son of James and Eloise Burgess. I was

Always afraid that I would be recognized and so I rarely did much wrong.

Sandi and I were married in 1969. We bought an old house that had been moved from the new freeway.

The house was on cinder blocks with and we had no way to get into the house. Dad and mom came to

Pecks Mill and built steps to get into the house from both the front and the side.

Mom and Dad enjoyed taking Alan on one of their vacations. Mom and Dad were really excited when

Jim and Celeste were born.

Tragically Dad died in 1974 leaving mom in a very vulnerable situation.

With her approval we moved to Arizona in 1978 and she followed a few years later.

Driving out mom would tell me about the angels on either side the front of the car.

The last few years were not the best for her. I know that she is happier being in heaven and being

reunited with our family. We have 18,000 family members identified in our family history. They are

having a great reunion. We should share in the joy that she is having being with all our family.

James and Eloise had the following children:

Debi BURGESS TRIBUTE

A TRIBUTE TO MY PARENTS

ROBERT EDWARD BURGESS AND BARBARA JOAN BARNEY

To start a tribute to my father and mother out on a sad note would hardly seem fair. I was blessed to

have had such loving parents. The memories that I have of them give me the strength to carry on.

I was born the second daughter of Robert and Barbara Burgess. They instilled in me so many

positive gifts that I hardly know where to begin. I must thank them for all that they gave and they gave

unconditionally.

They gave to me a stable family life filled with love, laughter and a strong desire to seek out what

was good and right about life.

First and foremost my parents taught me about God. Their faith was strong and they truly believed in

the life hereafter.

After that, I will always appreciate myfather's sense of humor. He was a strong man who enjoyed the

art of communication, family, good friends and last but not least, a good game of golf. He was a great

father, friend, super

salesman, and the best scratch golfer I have ever known.

My mother, Barbara, was a very loving and giving individual. She instilled in me the desire to

succeed, to reach out and be the best that I could be. Sometimes, she would say to me that I was too

giving. When I reflect back on that, I know that was something I had learned from her.

I cannot close without mentioning the great love my parents had for travel. We had too many great

camping trips to count. They are the only people I know that did not have a wedding reception. Instead,

in 1949, they look a month long honeymoon tour of the Western United States. They were two people

who loved each other, their children, and their

families. They had a good life together and brought love, laughter, and goodness into the world and into

all of us who knew them.

Robert Edward Burgess was born July 5, 1925. His mother died when he was seven, but his father,

brothers and Maude rasied him until he left the farm for the Navy at age 17. Even though he was

active in sports in school, his brightest memory is winning for Cabell County the Governor Spotswood

Award for West Virginia History.

Robert graduated from Marshall University in 1950 and after several years in business he became a

sales representative for Lederle Laboratory. He has continued as a ";medical missionary"; since 1954

making his home in Muncie Indiana with Barbara and his daugters Rebecca and Debbie.
