Robert Bond, Allen Bond and a complicated deal involving their mother Elizabeth Sanders.

According to Margaret Wheeler this was a sale of lthe old Bond place to John Burgess from Allen

Woodwrd Bond and Robert Nicholas Bond. There were to have the household furnishing at the time of

their Mother's death. This deed was recorded in Dec 1795

The Locust Grove ";Plantation"; was the property of of Charles Bond father of William Billy Bond. A deed

dated 18 Nov 1774 did not go through transferring the ownership to Billy Bond becaused Billy died in

May 1775. Instead the property was passed to Allen Woodward Bond and robert Nicholas Bond. Billy's

sons, when Billy's father Chares died in 1775 Elizabeth Saunders married John Burgess in 1778 and

the family stayed in the same home. About 1795 John Burgess bougtht the place from his step sons.

The farm was passed from John Burgess to his son Pleasant Burges and to his son William Edward

Burgess, the photographer. The farm was finally sold out of the family to John Stokes in 1948.

The Bond-Burgess farm is located where highway 6 crosses the Hardware River a few miles from

Scottsville, Virginia. Years ago there was a covered bridge here called ";Temperance Bridge";. Today

there is a roadside picnic area at the bridge called Temperance. Immediately after crossing the bridge,

traveling toward Richmond, there is a curving driveway leading rather steeply up a hill through an

avenue of ancient cedar trees to a white, two story frame house of the typical style of architecture seen

throughout the Virginia countryside. The walk leading from the driveway to the house was bordered with

huge English boxwoods. There were several cedars in the yard, and like those of the driveway, they

were large and old. Everthing was in a beautiful state of repair. No houses are near enough to mar the

scenery. The house is owned by Mr Stokes in Richmond, who comes out on weekends, but he has a

caretake to watch the place. Ms. Marshall found from inquries that the house had been built by Pleasant

Burgess, son of John and Elizabeth in about 1830. The family cemetery is on the next hill to between

the house and highway 6. It was quite large with at least two rows of stones with headstones

upstanding, eight in all. There were sunken palces and some broken headstones just above the ground.

There were several cedars in the cemetery. The cemetery is enclosed by a three foot binder block wall

and barb wire fence.

The deed with Allen Bond shows the property to be from Marshes Branch to the Hardware River. A

maps how the Hardware River flows about five miles into Fluvanna County from Albemarle County

where it begins near Carter Mountain. It flows around the mountain to the South where near Carter's

bridge crosses it. Sec John Carter patented this land in 1730, and mainted two residenes although he

never lived in them (one a house namd Blenheim and one a mil on the Hardware River) on the mountain

until his death in 1743. He left the mountain to his second eldest son Edward who maintained the

property until he died in 1794. His eldest son John got nothing. Edward lived his early life in

Fredericksburg but in later life spent much of his time at Blenheim. After Edward's death the property

was distributed to Edward's children. A county to Albemarle County property tax records Edward Carter

paid tax on from 237 slaves in 1782 down to 97 just before he died, from 110 to 1782 to 18 just before

he died , and from 62 cows in 1782 to just 50 just before he died..

From his 3 Oct 1833 application for a service pension we have John Burgess military record. He

enlisted in 1775 under William Henry as a substititute for Joseph Burton, and was marched to

Williamsburg Hampton and sundry places in lower Virginia. After three months he was discharged and

returned to Fluvanna County. In early 1776 he re-enlisted for three months under Capt Roger

Thompson as a ";minute man";. A few days later his unit was called up and marched to Richmond,

Hanover Town, New Kent Court House, Barwell's Ferry, and other places in lower Virginia. Afte several

months the unit was ordered to the western part of Virginia agains the Indians. They marched under Col

Haynes Morgan to Holestein River where they remained for three months. After obtaining a treaty with

the Indians, they retunred to Fluvanna where they disbanded. He obtained his pension and died in

fluvanna on 16 Feb 1835 according to the records. According to Margaret Wheeler's research, he was

living with his daughter Martha and her husband James Tapscott in Warren's Ferry, when he died.

Bedford County, Virginia marriage records Thomas Burgess and Wynna Caudle Key

dated 21 Dec 1789.

From 1793 in Bedford County, Virginia till a record in 1805 in Montgomery County, Virginia we have no

record on Thomas Burgess. In August 1805 Thomas Burgess Grantor bought 4 acres from John Toney

for $10. East River, Montgomery County, Virginia later became Giles County, Virginia. Burgess, Mullins,

Browning, Brown and Allied Families has more information on this family.

Wills Bedford County, Virginia dated 27 July 1778

William Burgess will states, ";I give and bequeath to my son Thomas Burgess one hundred fifty one

acres of land being the place whereon I now dwell in Bedford County, but my dear wife Susannah

Burgess is to have it as long as she remains a widow. I bequeath to my son Thomas Burgess my two

year boy mare, one smooth bore gun.";

Bedford County, Virginia Court Orders Thomas Burgess to work on Road 57 Index to Book 7 1782

(deed) dated May 27,1782 between a Thomas Burgess and John Booth both of of Bedford Co. Va.,

where in Thomas Burgess purchases 100 acres of land from John Booth on the Staunton River.

According to the Burgess, Mullins book p. 1 Chapter 2, this is four years after William (his father) dies,

but probably before Thomas receives his inheritance of 150 acres (most likely his mother Susannah was

still living).Thomas later married Wynna Caudle Key (1789), so this land purchase would have taken

place 7 years before the marriage. If he were born between 1758 and 1760, he would have been in his

20's when he bought the 100 acres.

On July 24, 1822 when Buffalo Creek was still in Cabell County, Thomas Burgess Senior leased one

hundred acres from John Preston of Botetourt County, Virginia for the unbelievable sum of $1.00 per

anum. The deed indicates that

the land was on Buffalo Creek near the Guyandotte River; therefore, this property was near the present

day town of Man, Logan, West Virginia.

Deed Books Cabell County, Virginia dated 24 July 1822 Thomas Burgess leases land on the waters of

the Buffalo Creek near the Guyandotte River in Cabell County Virginia. (now Logan County, West

Virginia near Man West Virginia.)

Everett White indicated that the Burgess family settled on Pond Fork very early. We cannot document

this, but believe

that there must be some truth in the statement. Pond Fork is the area (fork of the Coal River) of Price

Hill, Uneeda, Wharton, Van, Bob White, etc. Sounds like it is more of a description of an area, not a

specific place. Hope this helps.

Thomas Burgess settled on the waters of Buffalo Creek at Poplar or Man. In March of 2005 I was in

Man very close to the Guyandotte River. That section of south Man is called Burgess Addition. Very

interesting!
